1811: Governor Macquarie of NSW laid out Franklin Square as the town square.
1812-1861: Arriving ships were often stamped by people who came to retrieve mail. The location of the Postmaster General moved around Hobart.
1835: Household deliveries of mail three times a day. Except Sunday.
1862-1905: GPO corner of Murray and Macquarie Streets. The old Court House.
1899: An architectural competition to design a new GPO. Strong corner position in central Hobart. Wide streets and Franklin Square make it highly visible.
1901: Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary) laid the foundation stone.
1905: Building finished. Opened 2.9.1905 at 10am. Barriers to hold back the crowd. A race to post the first letter.
1906: Public raised money for clock tower and bells.
1912: Amundsen sends a telegram to the King of Norway.
