Hobart Synagogue
1843: The land was donated by Judah Solomon. Foundation stone for synagogue was laid.
A sealed bottle was placed under the stone. Written in Hebrew and English. Said who building was dedicated to and the subscribers to the building.
The synagogue was designed by James Thomson. Transported in 1825 for theft of jewels. In Hobart post punishment he worked as a draftsman and then architect.
The synagogue was built with private monies. Donated in London and locally.
The design of the building, the ornamentations celebrated freedom and the new promised land.
Benches at the back of the synagogue were set aside for convicts and the poor.
1845: Synagogue consecrated. First synagogue in Australia.
Most successful Jewish settlers returned to England as soon as they could. Difficult to maintain numbers.
Gold in Victoria led to further decrease in numbers.
