Supreme Court
1814-1824: Supreme court of NSW in legal charge. Tasmania was a part of the colony of NSW.
1824: Supreme court of Van Diemens Land created.
1824: First man tried before Supreme court was William Tibbs. Charged with killing an aboriginal.
1825: Van Diemens Land governed as a separate colony.
1826-1842: 203 criminals were sentenced to be hung.
1826-1860: Court sat in a building corner of Murray and Macquarie Streets. Both civil and criminal cases.
1860: Criminal cases in penitentiary Chapel. Civil cases in public buildings in Macquarie Street.
1980: Newly built Supreme court complex in Salamanca Place for both civil and criminal cases.
The Supreme Court consists of two buildings. One for the criminal courts. The other for civil courts and administration.
