Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

Annual yacht race managed by Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

1945: Peter Luke and friends planned a cruise to Hobart. Captain John Illingworth suggested a race. His idea wins.  Nine starters. The winner was Rani. Six days 14 hours.

1972: Melbourne Hobart yacht race began. Runs similar times. Down the west coast of Tasmania.

1982: Closest finish for line hours. 7 seconds

1998: Boats sailed into tragedy. 115 boats left Sydney. 44 arrived in Hobart. Five boats sank. Six sailors died.

Average year: 81 yachts leave Sydney. 81% arrive in Hobart.

Today: A top offshore yacht race with boats and crew from everywhere.

The race leaves Sydney on Boxing Day. Every year the weather dramatically effects and influences the race.

Every year there are two winners: Line honours: Today often 40-50 hours.
Handicap winner. Depends on length, shape, weight and sails.

Post race: The yachties relax on Hobart’s waterfront.  All the yachties are winners.
