Abel Tasman
1642: Abel Tasman sighted land near Macquarie Harbour. He named the land Antony Van Diemen’s Land after the Governor General of Batavia. Batavia was main island of the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch East Indies became Indonesia.
He rounded the southern part of Tasmania sailed into the unknown until reaching NZ. He then sailed to Fiji then back to Batavia.
Abel Tasman worked for the Dutch East Indies Company. They were an amalgamation of several trading companies based in the Netherlands. Main activity was trading silk, cotton and spices between India, Indonesia and Europe.

1988: The sculpture was inaugurated by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
The sculpture is a white rock with the Southern Cross on it. A fountain with three ships. Life size figure of Abel Tasman.
