Architect was Henry Hunter. He was a 26 year old ardent catholic. This church was his first big commission.
He became one of Tasmanian’s major architect. Much of his work decorates Hobart’s streets today. Hobart Town Hall. TMAG, St David’s Cathedral, St Mary’s Cathedral.
1858: Foundation stone laid.
1859: Church begins services.
1863: Chapel added. The Lady Chapel. Beautiful wood carvings carved by Tasmanian Nellie Payne.
1895: Two vestries added.
Stained glass windows. Some from England. Some made by English immigrants.
1862: Organ installed. Rebuilt and enlarged many times.
1877: Sunday School Hall built.
1971: Octagonal steeple was struck by lightning. Stones were dislodged and fell onto the roof.
1974: Organ moved to its present spot.
Exterior sandstone needs continual restoration.
