1856: Hobart the capital of Tasmania (a self-governing British colony).
1856: Population of Tasmania 60,000 to 80,000.
1856: Hobart town was a busy port town. Constant ships. New Wharf and Salamanca Place hummed.
1857: Streets were lit at night by gas lights from the Hobart Gas Works.
1858: New Government House completed.
1866: New Town Hall completed.
1866: St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral opened.
Wapping changed. The Government attempted to decrease prostitution, gambling and excessive drinking. They pulled down shanties and slum areas.
Replacements included the wool store and the Hobart Gas Works.
Battery Point and Sandy Bay attracted the wealthy people and new buildings.
1870: The Shot tower was built in Taroona. Used gravity and molten lead to form gun shot.
1891: Henry Jones began his company.
1893: The Hobart Electric Tramway Company began. Very popular and new lines are added. The suburbs grew and followed the tram lines. Tram lines to North Hobart, Lenah Valley, Glenorchy, Cascade, and Sandy Bay. Double deck carriages.
1842: Sydney and Melbourne become cities.
1857: Hobart becomes a city.
1861: Hobart gets some pipped water. Much later than Melbourne and Sydney.
Launceston becomes the business capital of Tasmania. New farming (potato and dairy); expanded forestry and timber; new mining companies in the north of the island; a busier port in Launceston.
1876: Railway line connects Hobart and Launceston.
1901: Population of Tasmania was 180,000.
