Hobart Town Hall
1852: Hobart becomes a municipality.
1858: Demolition of old Government house. Site was defined as site for Town Hall.
1861: A competition to design new Town Hall. Henry Hunter had designed the adjacent museum. Henry Hunter designed the Town Hall. The design was classical Roman. Intricate detailing. Symmetrical form. Main hall has elaborate plaster. Auditorium seats 300.
1864: A public holiday on 14th April to celebrate laying of foundation stone. The stones came from quarries at Mt Knocklofty and Bridgewater.
1866: Completion of building the Town Hall. Another public holiday.
The Town Hall housed police offices, council chambers, municipal court and State library.
1868: Organ ordered.
1870: Completion of Town Hall organ.
1871: A stone wall erected.
1925: Restoration of portico.
1990’s : Chandeliers placed.
Today: Hobart council meets there. A non-dramatic or lack luster building.
Hides its grandeur, opalescence, chandeliers and organ.
Inside the building it is solid, bulky and full of history.
Outside the building is dwarfed and overpowered by larger, bigger buildings.
Not on the tourist trial but you can enter.
