-1854: A ticket of leave convict built boats on the site.
1854: Hobart Gas Company was formed. Initially its job was to manufacture and distribute coal gas to light the city streets. Not long before gas was also going to factories and homes
Gas lighting of factories, homes and streets replaced oil lamps.
Working conditions improved. Working hours lengthened.
Streets became safer.
Cooking in the homes changed.
1857: Gas flowed through pipes and lit street lamps.
The coal came from England and NSW.
1894: Hobart Gas company established an electric power station to supply electricity to Hobart customers.
1898: Installed was a generator using a gas engine.
1901: Installed was a generator using a steam engine. The brick chimney was built to vent stem vapour and coal fumes from the steam generator.
1914: Premier tours Germany. Inspired by hydroelectricity in Ruhr Valley establishes Hydro Electric Commission. His goal was to generate cheap electricity and attract industry to Tasmania.
1915: Hydro Electric Commission takes over the production of electricity. The Hobart Gas Company returns to producing and distributing gas.
1924: Gas works site was increased along Evans Street.
A tank was constructed for tar and liquor.
Coal arrived in railway trucks and was fed straight into bunkers.
1978: End of town gas.
1987: Many buildings demolished for extension of Davey St. The engine house, stables and office buildings remain.
Today: Original chimney and some of original buildings.
