1811: Governor Macquarie selected a site away from town centre to house the soldiers. He wanted to separate soldiers from non-soldiers.
Macquarie ordered barracks to house 150 soldiers be built.
1814: Initial barracks built. The Field Officers’ quarters survives from this date.
1814-: Other buildings have been built, renovated or demolished: barracks, military hospital for sick soldiers, military prison for misbehaving soldiers, a tap room for thirsty soldiers, the five courts for exercise, the drill hall, canteen.
1870-1901: Tasmanian Government owned the Barracks. Sections were used for non-military uses.
1901-: Federal government owned and controlled the barracks for national defence.
1912: Albuera Street Primary school was bu8ilt on land taken from the Barracks.
1918: Military hospital on Hampden Road built. Now palliative care. Repatriation Centre.
The Anglesea Barracks contains The Army Museum Tasmania.
