St Michaels Collegiate School
1825: A two story building built. Single story wings added about ten years later. Owner was Alfred Stephen. House called Stephenville.
1836: Charles Darwin said: the house large, beautifully furnished, dinner most elegant... an excellent concert of rare Italian music.
1840: House leased to the Government. Queens School.
1844-1872: Official residence of Catholic bishop of Hobart.
1872-1880: A school for boys and a private home.
1880: Hobart Ladies college.
Circa1890: St Michaels Collegiate School resides. St Michael is the patron saint of the order of nuns that ran the school in the early years.
Today: Stephenville is an integral part of the school. St Michaels Collegiate has expanded and grown well beyond its initial home.
