Saint David's Cathedral
1804: Lt Gov David Collins was in charge of the new settlement. Hobart Town.
1810: Lt Gov David Collins died. Was buried in St David’s Park. St David’s Church (temporary wooden building) was erected over his grave. It was blown down.
1817: Foundation stone for the second St David’s Church was laid.
1823: St David’s Church was consecrated.
1836: St David’s Church was replaced by St David’s Cathedral. Same spot.
1868: Foundation stone for present St David’s Cathedral was laid.
1874: The new St David’s Cathedral was consecrated.
1892: Foundation stone of new Cathedral tower was laid.
1929: Commencement of new tower. Money from legacy.
1936: Bell tower built. Stones from Oatlands. According to original plans which were 68 years old.
St David’s Cathedral contains:
Stones from 6th century.
Flags from Van Diemens Land.
Stained glass windows.
Quality organ.
Seating for 650.
The cathedral is world class. Well worth a look inside.
