Ordnance Stores
Ordnances are military equipment. Traditionally ordnances are not used continuously, every minute of every day. They need to be stored. Initially they were stored on Hunter island.
1818: Ordnances stored near Mulgrave Battery.
1833: Architect John Lee Archer was commissioned to design new buildings to house government equipment needed for military and convicts.
1834: Adjacent New Salamanca wharf completed.
1836: Convicts were housed in hulks moored at New Wharf. They cut stone from Salamanca quarry and constructed the Ordnance Stores.
1838: Ordnance Stores complete. Occupied by Ordnance Department and the Army.
1956: Property passed to Post Master General’s Department
Today: The Ordnance buildings occupied by residences, shops, places to eat and places to browse.
